Fall Curriculum
September once meant sharpened pencils, now it means sharpened silhouettes. Our fall wishlists combine the practical with the irresistible.
As summer fades, it brings a sense of renewal. Once it meant fresh notebooks and the excitement of a new term, today it means the first glimpse of a new fashion season. We keep our focus on investment pieces, the ones meant to last, but fall still carries its own spark of anticipation. Here is what made it onto our early wishlists, split into two edits.
Lara: I can’t stop thinking about zippers in the back of clothing. Ever since Phoebe Philo teased those wool pants and jeans with the not-so-subtle back zip from top to bottom, the detail has lodged itself in my brain. Toteme has a new satin-y-like top in their FW collection with exactly that unexpected zip element in the back, and I know it would slip seamlessly into my wardrobe. What might be the most stunning piece of the season, in my opinion, is Phoebe Philo’s wave pants in black and white. They are daring but wearable, slightly strange but sculptural and elegant, and still unpolished, which is exactly why I love them so much.

The more I wear those not-quite-summer, not-quite-fall staples, the more I realize they’re the pieces I want more of. Good examples are the Skall Studio trench and By Malene Birger’s Dalimas coat (on sale). They are so good they make me want to let go of every other trench I own. Ever since seeing the Birrot show in Copenhagen a few weeks ago, I’ve been eyeing this jacket-style. The same goes for vintage-feeling tees, paper-thin, oversized and washed in just right. I love the ones from TWP, Kallmeyer and Toteme, with that taupe shade being everything.

Other tints I can’t get out of my head are muted cobalt and navy. The sweaters from Acne Studios and Entire Studios seem to be all I want to wear this fall, especially when combined with these cobalt blue Relaxe slippers from Carmen Amsterdam. Ever since finding a pre-loved silk-linen Gala pant from The Row, I can’t stop hunting for more easy pant styles. This pair from Róhe would be perfect with this checked shirt from COS. Bettter’s asymmetric pants look chic and comfortable, while Kallmeyer’s silk taffeta version and Paloma Wool’s semi see-through ones are compelling to say the least.

My wardrobe doesn’t feel complete without jeans. I’ve got my eye on St. Agni’s wide-leg pair and Rùadh’s straights that I would like to wear with their oversized sweatshirt. Both jeans would look even sharper with leather, with Toteme and Kallmeyer’s blazer styles or COS’s pony hair jacket (or similar in suede) at the top of my list. And just when I am about to feel sentimental about starting with the final part of the final season of Yellowstone, these Clive boots from Khaite are the perfect pair to ease the pain.
Heartbreakingly sold out, but not giving up on them just yet, are The Row’s Agnes bag (which is currently climbing in price on resale), the Peggy clutch in green, and the checked Tavishina coat, all equally fantastic and nearly impossible to find.
Charon: I’m four and a half months pregnant (more on that soon), so I’m welcoming fall with a double lens: the pieces that keep me dreaming and the ones that feel like the smartest investments right now.
I’m leaning toward simpler bags that don’t shout designer the way I once liked. Last year I invested in The Row Idaho XL (here in canvas) and I’d do it all over again. Annoyingly, it hasn’t cured my craving for the Idaho canvas bag (or here). The shape, size, and that subtle nod to an old lady’s shopper are irresistible. It keeps pulling me in. Just like my luxurious grey sweatpants obsession. Thinking of it as a phase is long over. This Maison Margiela grey lounge pants and Alaïa grey peplum (I can’t justify the price, but my mind keeps lingering) version take sweats to a whole new level, yet it’s the Baserange gray fold style that’s topping my chart. Not grey but a must is this Lu’u Dan black baggy bontan lounge pants. The Dries Van Noten wardrobe sweat favorite is on sale now. To pull any of these sweats off outside a loungy setting, I need a pair of Tabis. My head and heart are set on the Christen beige & black Tabi ballerinas (or anything Christen for that matter), Maison Margiela black ballet pumps and Maison Margiela suede ankle boots.
Like Lara, I’m into zippers, but I prefer them at the front. In our previous vintage edit (switch to paid to get all our newsletters, including a twice-monthly vintage handpicked curation in your inbox) we listed a cozy pre-loved zip-up Maison Margiela cardigan. But this cropped and regular length version from Extreme Cashmere is just it. Slightly easier on the wallet yet just as luxe is the extrafine merino take from Herman. And then there’s the Lemaire zip-up cardigan which could easily become my fall hiding place. Zip free, but undoubtedly at the top of my knit list, is the Rick Owens cut-out wool sweater, All-in navy display army sweater and Lemaire sweater with pockets.

Hodakova’s wide trousers shorts are back in stock and make for a perfect transitional piece. NYC brand 6397 remains my go-to for jeans and effortless basics. Glove ankle boots feel like the mood right now. These ones from Dries Van Noten are on sale (similar here) and at the top of my list (or try these from Arket), with the Jude ankle boots, Dear Frances Balla bott boots, Proenza Schouler sock boots, and Toteme’s navy satin ankle boots close behind. Phoebe Philo has me eagerly awaiting Collection D’s “ball and chain” necklace. Until then, the Pebble duo pendant has me hooked.
